A nurse call system is a crucial element in any healthcare facility as it provides patient reassurance by allowing the patient to communicate with the nurse or caregiver so they can attend to the patient's needs in a timely manner.
It's hard to imagine how a healthcare facility could function without a nurse call system. For example, if a patient fell or a patient's health deteriorated, how long would a patient have to wait before receiving the right care if the healthcare facility relied solely on a normal rounds schedule? What would be the consequences for that patient and the healthcare facility if something like this happened?
With a nurse call system, these dire situations can be avoided, and the patient treated immediately. Modern systems can even enable two-way communication between a patient and the nursing station. The advantage is that the nurse knows immediately what the patient needs without having to leave the ward. They can then prioritize the order in which patients need care based on the severity of the need. They can also prepare what they may need to bring with them when they visit a patient.
This significantly reduces nurses' trips between the nursing station and patient rooms, saving time that could be used to better care for each patient in need.
In addition to the function of communication between the patient and the nursing station, modern nurse call systems can also provide reporting functions to the administrative staff or the management of a healthcare facility. Management can then streamline workflow to serve their patients more effectively.
Most nurse call systems can also be integrated with access control systems or video surveillance systems, giving healthcare facility operators even more options to better serve their patients. For example, a real-time location system (RTLS) can be used to track patients or caregivers throughout the facility. A nurse tag can send information back to the nurse station once the nurse has entered a patient's room. This has the advantage that the nurses' station knows that a nurse is already taking care of the patient and can avoid sending two nurses to the same patient.
Some jurisdictions may even require the installation of a nurse call system in your healthcare facility to comply with federal, state, or local laws and regulations.
